On Being a Witness

In a court, a witness is someone who recounts a certain story or answers certain questions and everything he/she says is called a testimony. We need witnesses so that those people who did not see would have a chance to know what exactly happened – with the end goal of eventually making them believe.  But the question now is, would you believe?

Are you a good witness of Christ?

13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”[a]
14 But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? 15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”[b] Romans 10:13-15

Before you actually know about something, you have to hear it first from someone – either through verbal or written. We do live in a world wherein we still need to see it before we believe it but we do also live in a world wherein we learn by example. That is why we need also to show Jesus’ love to others rather than just saying it.

Why? What really is in God’s heart?

9 The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. 2 Peter 3:9

10 For the Son of Man[a] came to seek and save those who are lost.” Luke 19:10

God is so patient in waiting for us. He does not force us to believe in Him too fast because He wants it to be out of our own will. He wants everyone to repent and save us who are lost. He is one true Father to us. I couldn’t believe that after all those years, I just came to my senses of finally embracing God’s love for us. He waited for me and He will wait for everyone else. We are sinners and the one true God is patiently waiting for us to repent and for me, that is such a huge act of love. He is all-powerful and can do anything but He wouldn’t change your hearts in just a split second because He just wants to instead, He will just knock on our hearts waiting for us to open it to Him.

And what’s next once we open our hearts to God and actually felt His love?

8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:18

True even today. Once we feel good about something, tasted something great, treated nicely, we immediately tell that to our friends – or even post it on social media. Then what’s next? People would surely love to try it as well. Just for the mere fact you experienced something good form it and they would want to experience the same. That is also what’s going to happen if we continue telling how God loves us and how God continuously reveals Himself to us. We are indeed witnesses of that immeasurable love from above.

How do we become an effective witness of Christ then?

A. Through our life. Good deeds will overflow as a result of that love. Remember that our salvation is a free gift bestowed upon us and together with His love, we instantly shoe gratitude by walking the same path and obeying His words. We were already saved once we accept Jesus as our Lord and personal Savior. Doing good deeds won’t save us but it will show everyone how we were saved.

16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. Matthew 5:16

B. Through our story. As I have said, recount the story of how God touch our lives is a great way to become a witness. Whenever I read the Book of John, I am both amazed and frustrated how Jesus handles the unbelievers – He is super freakishly nice! He continuously perform miracles even though they always doubt Him and His glory. He called upon sinners, the lame, the blind, the Samaritan woman, and the adulterous woman to witness His greatness instead of those who already have the power to change the minds of the people back then like Julius Caesar and Pontius Pilate. Why make witnesses from people who are lowly and let alone sinners? That is how amazing His patience for us.

39 Many Samaritans from the village believed in Jesus because the woman had said, “He told me everything I ever did!” John 4:39

C. Through the Gospel. As one of  my DGroup sisters says, the Bible is the “Book of Instructions Before Leaving Earth” it is a nice reminder of how alive the Bible is. Every passage speaks through us differently depending on how God wants it to be. Always read the Bible because it is one of the ways on God talks to us. Of course not just reading it, understand it, and share it. I do believe that people need to hear the good news especially nowadays, evil spreads out easily thanks to the social media. The good news must spread faster in order to somehow start a change.

20 So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!”

Recount your life before Christ came in to your life. Tell everyone the turning point why you needed to seek Christ and how God responded. Tell everyone how your life became after Christ came. What has died on you in order to live again with Christ? Let’s make the story of how God continuously touch our lives be known!

16 For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile.[a]
