How God Paid off my Credit Card Debt

As a follower of Christ, I already know how intentional His love is for us but it is always a refreshing feeling to be reminded especially when we feel so lost, alone, and troubled. While I do know God’s love, the question is, Am I receiving it the right way?

8 1 “Be careful to obey all the commands I am giving you today. Then you will live and multiply, and you will enter and occupy the land the Lordswore to give your ancestors. 2 Remember how the Lord your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands. 3 Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. 4 For all these forty years your clothes didn’t wear out, and your feet didn’t blister or swell. 5 Think about it: Just as a parent disciplines a child, the Lord your God disciplines you for your own good. 6 “So obey the commands of the Lord your God by walking in his ways and fearing him. ?Deuteronomy 8:1-6 NLT

True Love is an unconditional commitment towards imperfect people to seek their highest good which often requires sacrifice resulting in God’s glory. God’s love will always be true and intentional for every one of us and this may come in different forms and instances in our lives like misfortunes and lost – we may not see the whole picture of it, we may not realize the lesson afterwards, and we may not understand it at all – but it is good to be reminded that everything He does in our lives is all for our highest good.

We are His creation and seeks the highest good for us that is why He always reminds us to humble ourselves and seek complete dependency on Him – our one true provider in our lives. As a good and loving father to us, He disciplines us, His children, for our own good – His love never changes even if our love for Him still depends on the situation.

I had an experience of being disciplined by God. When I started to follow Christ, my life fell into order. God took care of my career path and placed me someplace else where He knows I can prosper – and that also means a promotion and a huge jump in my salary but a ghost in the past had to reappear after years of inexistence. I had to face a sin I kept sweeping under the rug – a credit card debt. Incurring the debt was a long rotten story but the lesson was, don’t buy what you do not need or else, you would be selling what you need to pay that debt. I did not experience selling any of my stuff back then but I kept on borrowing money when I fell short of funds, it’s like selling my pride. It was mid-transition from my old company to my new company and as we know, the funds in between jobs are not pretty. I got other bills to pay and I still have to deal with my cash handling. I swear at that moment, I was feeling weak and lost. My dad did not know about this but my mom does and she was assuring me that no one goes to jail for debts. Lol. Following Christ indeed convicts you of your sins and God humbled my heart. At first, I was afraid to admit to myself the need for praying and was afraid to go short and hungry; I was even about to borrow money from a friend who is willing to pay for it and is welcome to receive an installment payment from me, however I know it was not right. I sought the counsel of my DGroup sisters and was reminded of God’s unchanging love. I remembered how I cried that night of our fellowship and how I felt deeply troubled. I quoted below the scripture we were studying that night – oh so fitting to my situation back then!

25 “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? 27 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?
28 “And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, 29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. 30 And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?
31 “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ 32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. 33 Seek the Kingdom of God[a] above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
34 “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today. Matthew 6:25-34 NLT

As a new follower back then, I already felt the test of character God gave me and yes, it was difficult at first but when I started to completely surrender everything to Him and declared my dependency on Him alone, I was set free. I paid the huge debt before 2017 ended and looking back, I did NOTHING to pay it all but obey God and His words; my monthly bills and expenses stayed the same, I always take Grab or Uber to and fro CCF or my DGroup fellowship nights and B1GFridays; I even tithe bigger than I could imagine I could give – He provided me more than what I needed. As a matter of fact, I see it hilarious that I cried over money! Sobrang babaw ko grabe! I was missing out my God who provided me with the new high-paying job! He made sure that I am weak and on my knees to be dependent on Him. It was a discipline I will never forget from my Heavenly Father and I am truly humbled by His intentional love for me. Complete surrender and dependency on Him is not a sign of slavery but FREEDOM.

Many times (more often than we could admit) we neglect, forget, and blame God for the challenges in our lives and when we seek forgiveness, He will always make sure we remember His Saving Love for us. He is a God who provides but when we forget Him, He can take away anything that makes us independent to be reminded of our dependency on Him. While it is true that it is difficult to accept everything that comes from God, it is also true that the fitting response to a master is obedience. I learned that the One True God’s unchanging love changes US and it is not enough that we know that but also to share that love with others.

Do you want proof? Of course, you do! We do live in a “see is to believe” generation and I am prepared for a solid evidence:

Yep, if you sum it all up, it is Php 114,500 without going hungry and weary of what tomorrow could bring. I used to worship money as my god but not until I met the One True God who gives the True Love to live the True Life! I am a proud follower of Jesus and I am debt free since 2017!

To God be the Glory!

I love this. Just this February, I started going to church again, doing daily devotions and doing weekly fellowships as well. And I must say, everything is falling in to place. You are right. If you surrender EVERYTHING to God, all will fall into place. Despite not having enough savings, I left the job I was dreading to go to everyday. And until now, I am alive, able to eat food that i want and living life by just doing freelancing. Pero this time, I am able to do what i really want and what my heart desires ?? Si God nag guide sa akin at pina feel niya sa buong process ng rendering ko na, I should not worry about anything pag nag resign ako kasi He will provide. And indeed He does. Marami pa rin ako kaba and fears pero, nagppray na lang ako and sinasabi na “I trust you Lord and ikaw na po bahala” tapos magugulat na lang ako may something na mangyayati. Hindi man siya according to my plan. But definitely according to His plan ?? Which is the best for us. Thank you for sharing this story and God bless you more!!!
