SOcial MEdia: #RELAX

These are my notes from B1G Fridays SOcial MEdia: #RELAX
How is your phone changing you? Are you using your phone or is your phone using you?

#RELAX
Rest in the middle of this RESTLESS world.

OUTLINE
– Bad effects of social media
– Benefits of disconnecting
– Practical Steps of Connecting

Main Point: I will disconnect with ________ to connect with GOD.

NOMOphobia – being out of cellular phone contact.

“Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for “bad company corrupts good character.” 1 Corinthians 15:33

Social media always affects our customary state – Our manners. Technology is good and can be a great tool to worship God. But anything that is good that is used in excess can become bad.

Bad Effects of Social Media
Mind: Spiritual and Mental ADD
Heart: Corrupted and Idolatrous
Body: Tired and Restless
Soul: Addicted and Enslaved

A study showed that gaining likes in social media drives a little dose of Dopamine. It gives you a sense of affirmation. We are now all called “SMS” – Social Media Slaves

“You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything.” 1 Corinthians 6:12

The Benefits of Disconnecting
1. The Promise of Rest – ??if you are not disconnected from keeping you connected from God, you will never feel that “rest” Salvation entails that every Christian will feel that rest.
“So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall.” Hebrews 4:9-11

2. Intimacy with God
“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29

??”You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our souls are restless until it finds rest in you.” Augustine of Hippo

Our true source of rest is not in the abundance of vacations, trips, nor leaves. It is the abundance of spending unhurried time with God himself.

The Practical Steps of Connecting
1. Be Still.
“Be still, and know that I am God!” Psalms 46:10
“Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself, like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk. Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me.” Psalms 131:2

2. Build a Habit
Detach: Fasting, Limit Usage, Accountability
Engage: Develop Spiritual Disciplines, Abiding
